In his boyhood, Richard worked at Bury Ground
Print works for Messrs. Peel & Yates, Richard eventually rose to be manager of the concern.
Richard then entered into the cotton trade at Summerseat, and purchased the Summerseat Estate.
Richard had a large mansion built for him at Higher Summerseat in 1836 (Summerseat House) and he also owned five of the cotton mills of Summerseat.
