Great site. It all makes more sense now that I have visited a couple of times and walked around some of the area.

Surnames I am Researching:

I am looking at the Haworths, Parkers and Hutchinsons of Woodhey and Holcombe Brook as seen in the 1871 and 1881 Census with Barnes Haworth as the senior figure.

They were concerned with the Woodhey Chemical Works, Bank Mill and New York Mill on Redisher Brook. Various ruins can still be seen on the brook below the Hare and Hounds. Any comments or information would be appreciated.

Barnes died in 1882 and is buried at Emmanuel at Holcombe. He was married to Hannah Duckworth and was a Manufacturing Chemist.

Hi

I was a boarder at Summerseat House in 1956 due to a bad chest infection caused by the fog and smoke of Manchester, which was very industrial [mines mills etc.]

I have happy memories of the open fields around the house, and the big tree in the front garden which we used to hide behind when playing hide and seek with nurse Grey. I stayed for two years before going on to an open air school in Cheetham Hill.

I am now sixty and still have chest problems but think that if not for my stay at Summerseat i would not be here today.

What a brilliant site, I was only planning on dipping in and discovered I've been sat here totally transfixed for over an hour!

I do the breakfast show on 107.4 Tower FM and I have a feature where I have a quick little fact about our area. Sometimes its Bury sometimes its Bolton, well your site will certainly give me plenty to talk about.

I lived in Bury for many years, I cannot believe how much has changed, I love history its really interesting and hopefully it will fuel other peoples interest when I mention some of the amazing work you have done here!

Please keep up the excellent work, if I ever find anything whilst researching for the breakfast show I'll pass it over to you!

You have my total admiration for the work you've done, please keep going - I'll be book marking you so I can find you again!

Kindest regards

Vix...x

Looking for a long lost relative Daphne Sanders who moved to Summerseat in c1954 to be with her boyfriend then and whom we think she married in 1957 in Heywood.

Research seems to suggest that his name might be David Barker, so they were David and Daphne Barker... any information on Daphne and her family would be interesting.

I visited Summerseat briefly last weekend. My mum lived there as a child. She died recently, and I didn't have enough time to research her child hood home properly. I found your site to be very helpful and will visit again.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I stayed at Summerseat House convalescing from January 1948 to November 1948. I had my 11th birthday whilst there. Are there any photographs of the building and grounds during that period.

Hi there, I am a descendant of John Altham who was a farmer and butcher in Summerseat during 1851 - 1880. He moved with many of his family from Grindleton near Clitheroe which was then part of Yorkshire. I have been to Summerseat, but could not find any of the houses they lived in. I am sure Plum Tree House still exists, but could not find it.

Thanks for the web site - very interesting

I am on a return visit after a year-long lay off because of illness.

I am so grateful to Peter and his family for providing so much family history/local information to us all for free. Thanks to him I managed to locate the grave of my 4x gt grandfather and other family members at Rowlands old Church, which I had been looking for for years.

Thank you so much for your continued commitment to this website.

I didn't realise my mum's story was here (Lilian Galloway). It was gratifying to take her back to Summerseat House in the summer of 2008. She was very happy to be there again.

Thanks for keeping this resource for people who may have interest in the history of the place.

What a great site! I lived in the village from 1948 - 68 when I married. It brought back a lot of memories. Milkman Joe Pye's horse Dolly used to knock on our front door in Beech Street with her nose to get her regular sugar butty! The weekly visit from George in his old converted charabang filled with fruit, veg and fish. Everyone used to really clean the outside of their houses using the dolly stone to whiten the edge of the steps. The small local shops - Mooneys then Ronnie Stewarts in India Street, Harry Everett 'over the bridge' near one of the 2 Co-ops.

Oh happy days!!  Keep up the good work

I have visited this sight many times in the past and as an ex resident of Holly Street (1965 - 1970) I find it so interesting.

The amount of effort you have obviously put in and the overall quality of the site add so much to the enjoyment.

Thanks!

I used to go to Campaigners at the Evangellical church which stood on the corner of Railway Street opposite the Liberal club (was it previously a co-op?) and it would be interesting to see any old pictures.
