I can't thank you enough for this wonderful site, it has brought a tear to my eye. My late dad often used to tell me of his mother's two brothers who were killed during WWI. It is all the more ironic because shortly it will be Remembrance Sunday, I have been trying to find out more about them for years. I believe I was told by my father that one of the brothers was a gunner and took a direct hit during a battle. I think I have just seen their two names inscribed on the War Memorial at Rowlands Church and it appears that they died within one month of each other in 1918.

My dad had quite a lot of connections with Rowlands as I seem to remember him telling me he and his twin brother were born in a cottage not far from Rowlands school in 1924 and that he attended there when he was small.

I am very grateful for any information about the following surnames:-

What a fab website. I was born in Summerseat, lived there from 1972 until 1993 on Queens Place. I have very fond memories and can remember every detail of the village and the people who lived there - I can still remember all the names of families on Queens Place. It was interesting to see a picture of the old Rowlands church, as I was christened there but it was knocked down a few years later and I never knew what it looked like. Remember looking out onto the tomb from class 4 at Summerseat Methodist school though. It was a true village where everyone knew everyone and kept a lookout on each other. I remember many nostalgic things and consider it a wonderful place to have grown up. It was a safe a beautiful place to grow up. I will come back and visit one day and hope it hasn't changed too much.

My Mum worked up at Summerseat House for many years as the school cook and was a mother hen to many a young resident there. I used to walk up and meet her after school and still remember the big old house with it's unique smell, scary cellars and big winding staircase.

Thank you for a great website providing an insight into a place full of wonderful memories.

Thank you to all who took the trouble to photograph and transcribe the headstones - what a boon for family history researchers, especially those who live too far away to visit, or are too infirm to negotiate some graveyards that are especially poorly maintained.

This would be an excellent model for others to follow.

Discovering this website has bought back many happy memories for me as I was a pupil at Summerseat house from April 1963 to April 1968 A return visit to Summerseat house (if it could be arranged) after all these years would make my memories complete. I can even remember the names of some of the staff who worked there.

Thanks for such a great website.

Were you a pupil at Summerseat House between 1963 and 1968?

If so then I would be interested to hear from you. I spent 5 happy years there.

My great-great grandparents, (James) Richard and Rachel Ashman lived in Summerseat sometime after 1911 (when they are still in Salford) and at least until the early 1940s. My mother, born 1934, remembers going to see them on a bus and a train from Salford although she doesn't remember how old she was, she was old enough to remember the trip and some details. She says Rachel had a bakery business that was across the field from where they lived and there were some other family members there too. Rachel's maiden name was Almond, they were from Leeds. Richard and Rachel had met and married in Morley and they went over to live in Salford at the turn of the century.

I wonder if they died and were buried in Summerseat.
Your website is very good and maybe it'll encourage to visit the town one day. Well done!

I stayed with the Ratcliffe's in their home at Stormer Hill House when I was a teen in the early 1970's. I have lost track of the family as I live in the US. The daughter, Elizabeth had initially stayed with us in the US through an exchange with her high school. Names have faded, and I can't even remember the only son's name. He was the youngest and is last name would still be the same. All the girls have married, and names would be different. Fond memories, wonderful experience all the way around. Wonderful family to share their time showing my mother and myself all around England.

Wish I could contact them.

Wonderful confirmation of the family history I was shown and told growing up in Louisiana.
My Dad was from New Orleans, graduated from LSU in engineering, and was U.S. Merchant Marine officer during WWII. His oil tanker ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the Gulf of Mexico coming out of the Mississippi River headed to England/Europe. He survived, went on to graduate from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point and spent the next 30 years as a ship's captain.
Ur site is such a reward and so wonderful! Filled in many blanks for me and my family about our family traditions, history, tree, amazing relatives and British home of origin.

Thanks for all ur dedication, love, talent and hard work. Carry on.
Have been to England several times but never to Summerseat. It's tops on my list for our next visit ASAP.

If there is anything I can do to help, plz email me here.
With Love and Peace always, Namast

My poor great grandmother lost her husband aged 41 ;a child aged 3; a child aged 1 and 4month old twin boys whilst in Summerseat but battled on herself to the age of 80 when she re-joined her family in the now overgrown Rowlands graveyard. (Can we not clear it?)

I lived at No1 North View for 6 years (1983 - 1989)but moved down to Warwick after that. I had reason to be back up't North today and with some time to kill decided to pop down Bass Lane to see what had changed. Well, obviously quite a lot but once you looked past some of the new buildings it was amazing how much came flooding back and I once again appreciated what a special place Summerseat really is. I recalled turning down Bass Lane after slogging up and down the UK motorway system for my job and immediately feeling more relaxed as the vista changed and I reacclimatised to the peace and quite.

One disappointment was the old Liberal Club which although never the most attractive building certainly had more character than what is sitting there today. I also recalled the steward/custodian at the time Cyril(?) who was the most unbelievably knowledgeable man on a whole host of subjects. Cyril accompanied me on my last business trip to Barbados and once I introduced him to the owner of the company where I was working they spent hours and hours discussing the bible and the tactics of tank warfare. Not a logical connection in my mind but they obviously enjoyed the debate.

Thanks to the owners of this site for letting me reminisce even more than I did this morning.

Thomas Holden, not sure of his d.o.b.-he Married Elizabeth? She was born around 1838? Their son (my Great Gandpa,-born around 1872) James William Holden married a Florence Neville (possibly she was from Leeds) I have only snippets - but I would like to find any of the Holdens going back to Thomas and before.

My Gran, the daughter of James and Florence did not say a lot about her family but a few years ago she did mention to a family member that she seemed to remember something about someone in her family being involved in the textile trade with India, sadly Gran is no longer with us but as this information has just come to light it has interested me as to whether it is true or not and so as I am sure James William came from Summerseat (or close) I wondered if any one can help me expand on what little information I have.

Thanking you regards Maggi.

Hi

I was a boarder at Summerseat House in 1956 due to a bad chest infection caused by the fog and smoke of Manchester, which was very industrial [mines mills etc.]

I have happy memories of the open fields around the house, and the big tree in the front garden which we used to hide behind when playing hide and seek with nurse Grey. I stayed for two years before going on to an open air school in Cheetham Hill.

I am now sixty and still have chest problems but think that if not for my stay at Summerseat i would not be here today.

What a great site! I lived in the village from 1948 - 68 when I married. It brought back a lot of memories. Milkman Joe Pye's horse Dolly used to knock on our front door in Beech Street with her nose to get her regular sugar butty! The weekly visit from George in his old converted charabang filled with fruit, veg and fish. Everyone used to really clean the outside of their houses using the dolly stone to whiten the edge of the steps. The small local shops - Mooneys then Ronnie Stewarts in India Street, Harry Everett 'over the bridge' near one of the 2 Co-ops.

Oh happy days!!  Keep up the good work
