I have placed a few newspaper cuttings
from the 1800's, on this page, the articles relate to
Summerseat.
=============
New Page Added
I have just added a new page, namely the
Opening of the E.L.R.
Here I have placed a few very old
newspaper cuttings that I have found relating to the opening
of the railway, and also one which relates to a fatal
accident just outside Summerseat station in 1855.
I have added a new page dedicated the the
old railway goods shed, which is on Rowland's Road and next
to the station. I believe that this is the only industrial
building in Summerseat, that is intact and unaltered from
its original structure. It dates back to 1847, and has just
recently been listed as a Grade II listed building.
I do hope that you enjoy your visit to our Summerseat web site.
This site is dedicated to
information about Summerseat, which is a village about 8
miles North of Manchester, and 2 miles North of Bury, which are in
Lancashire, UK.
I have had many really nice e-mails from many
people from around the world that have enjoyed their visit to this site.
I have just added the great Train Ride
Video from Bury to Stubbins, stopping at Summerseat and Ramsbottom
station, sorry that this went missing for a short while, but I have
now hopefully sorted the problem out, I really do hope that you
enjoy this trip back in time, as it was filmed during 1966, and the
line has changed somewhat since then.
I have been sent this very good photo which shows the
Summerseat Wesleyan prize choir, 1st May 1920.
We only know 1 person in the photo, front row 4th from left,
Emily Haworth (married Daniel Bamford). It would be great if we can
place more names of the people who are in the photo, so if you
happen to know any of the choir members,
Many thanks to Jen Grady who sent me the copy of the photo, and
also for allowing me to place it on the Summerseat Web Site.
Here are a few newspaper cuttings that I
came across, dating from the 1800's.
The articles relate to happenings in
Summerseat, and I thought you may find these of interest, just click
on the article to view a larger picture of it, the image will open
in a separate window.

Here is a lovely bit of history, as you can
now travel on this short train ride from Bury to Stubbins, stopping
at Summerseat and Ramsbottom stations. This film was taken in 1966.
I really do hope that you enjoy your ride.
Richard Hamer who is the 3xGreat Grandson of the Richard Hamer
who had many interests in the village of Summerseat, made a short
visit to Summerseat at the end of April 2007. It was great to meet him, and also a
pleasure to have been able to give him a tour of the village, he
even managed to see inside Summerseat House, Richard was really
grateful to the staff who had made this possible, Summerseat House
was the home of his 3xGreat Grandfather. Richard also enjoyed lunch
in the Hamer's Arms Public House and enjoyed chatting to the Landlord
& Landlady about the history of the area.
Richard lives in the USA, and was in Europe
on his holidays when he decided to make a short visit to see the
area that his ancestors came from.
We have become very good friends.
Richard Hamer at Hamer Terrace, Summerseat.
You can read more about the Hamer family on the 'Mills of
Summerseat' and the 'About Summerseat' pages of this site. Richard
has supplied me with some lovely pictures and information, and has given me
permission to share these with you all on the Summerseat website,
and I am really grateful to him. I have also added a small family tree of Richard Hamer, who was
born in the mid 1700's.
I am sure that you will find it interesting.
I have placed Transcriptions that
I have done of the 1841, 1871 & 1881 censuses of Summerseat on this
site, I do hope you find
some of your ancestors here.
I have now added a couple of extra pages to
this site, you can see them on the 'Opening of the ELR' page, I have
placed a few very old newspaper cuttings that I have come across
which relate to the opening of the railway, and also one that
relates to a fatal railway accident which occurred close to
Summerseat station in 1855.
I have been in contact recently with somebody who has
an interest in the old lower graveyard at Rowland's Methodist
Church, Summerseat, Lancashire, and he has setupa

Lancashire" email group

Rowlands, then I would ask that you join this group, more
information will be posted on this site shortly.
